Earl Brothers

Here is a fantastic realatively fresh new Bluegrass group, the Earl Brothers. Heard them performing live the other day, and goddamn if I wasn’t impressed. They’re not brothers, nor are they named Earl, but they get down with some real nice stuff.

Fratty Music – Wale Back to The Feature

Fratty music can come in a variety of forms, including music for parties, music for getting high, etc, and can fall into a number of different genres. For instance, a true fratstar will have some OCMS, some Josh Groban Project (Infinity 2008 – is there a better song for yak?), and some Young Jeezy on his iPod, just to name a few.

In the rap category, one of the best up-and-coming guys is Wale, and he just released his mixtape Back to the Feature. Since this is a blog, well fuck it, let’s do a review.

Its good, but not great. He’s done better. But this mixtape has been in the works as the same time as his first album, Attention Deficit, and its easy to see why the mixtape might suffer from a lack of attention. Most of the beats aren’t exactly thrilling because 9th Wonder kinda sucks, but the songs produced by others are fucking sweet. And even on subpar beats, the lyrics and delivery show through as the reason Wale is damn fly.  Chillin (ft. Lady Gaga) is catchy as balls, but he says his name too damn much, and the inclusion of Gaga is a little odd. Solid features abound – from Talib Kweli to UCB to Bun B (rest in peace Pimp C., may we hear your pimp-tastic flow in heaven) to K’Naan - and they highlight some solid tracks, but nothing really stands out the way you’d hope from a pre-album mixtape.

Fact of the matter is that Wale is damn good, get this mixtape (shit, its free), listen to it and know what’s coming is going to be even better, becuase I’ve got high hopes for Attention Deficit.  Since every review has to end in a number, I’m going to give it a 7.5, worth a listen.

Now from my personal point of view, I happen to know an insane individual who is the leading man of Dead Mic Delivery, and I’ve been fortunate enough to hear some of the tracks off this upcomming album pre final production. Let me tell you, shit is straight gasoline. The beats and flow are absolutely insane and show true growth from Wale. I’ll leave you fuckers with a little rememberance of that first track that got the kid big. Listen to it, and doun’t be a fucking douchebag.
